hyprburst
hyprburst is a fast application launcher for Arch Linux and Hyprland, written in Rust.
It opens its own GPU-rendered window with a semi-transparent blurred background. Rio’s embeddable terminal engine manages the launcher’s PTY and VT grid, while hyprburst keeps ownership of its Wayland surface and OpenGL renderer. Apps are shown in a list or grid with icons, searched with hybrid fuzzy/prefix matching, and ranked by launch history stored in SQLite.
Features
Section titled “Features”- Rio terminal engine —
rio-vtmanages PTY lifecycle, VT parsing, resize, input, and terminal grid state - Native GPU window — winit and OpenGL paint Rio’s grid while owning the Wayland surface for proper blur and transparency
- Fast — under 50ms startup, instant search results as you type
- Smart ranking — results ranked by recency (exponential decay) plus frequency (launch count)
- Icon grid — apps shown with monochrome Nerd Font glyphs matched by category
- SQLite history — launch history for smarter results and usage stats
- TOML config — window, font, colors, banner and layout at
~/.config/hyprburst/config.toml - Hyprland native — launches apps via
hyprctl dispatch, auto-detecting the 0.55+ Luahl.dspform - Terminal fallback —
hyprburst tuiruns inline in any terminal for SSH or no-GPU sessions
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- Linux with Hyprland — hyprburst opens its own GPU window and dispatches launches through
hyprctl. - OpenGL — via your GPU driver (Mesa or vendor).
- Hyprland 0.55+ recommended — legacy 0.48–0.54 setups can use the shipped hyprlang snippet.
- Nerd Font (optional) — for application-specific icons. Without one, a generic four-tile app symbol appears.
